Sam Vaghar selected to be the senior speaker at comencement

Sam Vaghar '08 will be this year's senior speaker at the May 18 commencement ceremony.

Vaghar was selected by a committee compiled of faculty, staff and students, the nonvoting chairman of the committee, Dean of Student Life Rick Sawyer, said.

The committee picks 10 speeches from the submissions, then students' names are put back onto the essays and they are put online for the senior class to vote on them.

According to Oscar-winning filmmaker Errol Morris, making his latest documentary, S.O.P.: Standard Operating Procedure, about the infamous photographs of the Abu Ghraib prison, was like baking a cake. "There are certain ingredients in this movie: The evidence that came from the photographs � retrospective interviews � and then images that I have abstracted from what people tell me in the interviews," he explained at a screening at Brandeis on April 17.

EDITORIAL: Keeping a plastic promise

When University President Jehuda Reinharz introduced Rep. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) during EarthFest earlier this month, he committed to ridding Brandeis of plastic bottles. Now that Mr. Reinharz has made this pledge, this campus must hold him to his word.

Brandeis has already demonstrated its commitment to the "greenification" of campus with the construction of environmentally sustainable buildings, and the administration must continue that dedication to preservation by eliminating environmentally destructive plastic bottles from campus.

People often lump all homeschooling together to create one stereotypical mess of uber-religious, unsocialized children. I myself was homeschooled officially for two years of my life. Throughout my experience, I found that my home environment was a much better institution of learning than any traditional school.

Our organization was happy to read the op-ed published in the Justice calling for Brandeis University to stop using eggs from caged hens. ("Chicken Run: Making cage-free eggs a priority for Brandeis," April 15 issue) As the op-ed stated, confining hens in barren wire cages is cruel and inhumane, and no socially responsible institution should ever support this form of animal cruelty.
