This seems to be a trend at Brandies. Last year, coach Brian Meehan rolled out the red carpet for soccer star Ben Premo to join the basketball team. Anyone watching pickup or IM basketball could tell that there were more skilled players, yet Premo walked onto the team without a tryout because of his special status as an athletic soccer goal scorer.
If Brandeis sports demands to be taken seriously, it cannot keep inviting its star athletes to join teams they are clearly underqualified to compete for. Like other schools, Brandeis should hold tryouts and let the best players play. It says worlds about the focus of the athletic department that its prominent teams keep inviting unqualified players team based on status in other sports, not skill in the actual sport they are playing.
