EDITORIAL: We didn't start the FIRE: Future of free speech at stake

Abstract:
When he spoke here earlier this month, Foundation for Individual Rights in Education founder Harvey Silverglate proclaimed that free speech, parody and vigorous debate have died in American higher education. Free speech may not be completely dead on this campus, but the administration's disregard for the voice of its faculty members means free speech is in serious jeopardy....

Almost a year later, these issues have not been resolved. Faculty members and students have continued to speak up, and students have rallied and formed new students' rights organizations. Now that Brandeis is facing very hard choices, the administration is facing a campus where trust has eroded. Resolving the Hindley affair would do a lot to show that the administration is actually listening and can admit mistakes. This would give the administration more credibility when it makes some of the very hard decisions ahead.
