I find the headline "Prof penalized for racist remarks" completely misleading. Primarily, there is absolutely no proof that the remarks were racist, were you state they were racist as fact. A more appropriate headline would have been "Prof penalized for allegedly racist remarks."

Shameful how you manipulate the truth and validate the administration when they are so clearly in the wrong.

The headline of this article is actionable. No trial has been held, no conviction achieved: the troubling situation here faced by the Administration and the university community is one in which one or more people have claimed that racist remarks were made, and others also present (Prof. Hindley so far the only one interrogated by the Administration) have denied it. The article makes that, clear, although it also narrates actions taken by the university on the basis of these claims that seem tantamount to punishment. The nature and even the literal content of Prof. Hindley's remarks are not yet known.

Why then would the Justice headline such an article with an accusation of racism? It's an astonishing editorial decision, and in a situation already troubling for its implications with regard to academic freedom and procedural transparency, it seems crucial that the Brandeis community hear about that decision from the Justice, its journal of note, either in the form of an e-mail to the community or in next week's paper.

As an alum and politics major from '81, I find it absurd that Professor Hindley should be accused in this manner. He is a scholar of latin american politics, has been teaching this course for many many years (I took it over 25 years ago)and seems to be a victim of the political correctness police.

Brandeis' policing of speech is shameful. Whatever Hindley said should not have resulted in thought police monitoring his lectures. (I don't agree with his politics -- but _everyone_ needs free speech protection.)

In the article I said that the professor was being considered "guilty until proven innocent." Let's hope he wasn't also guilty until proven innocent of having cannibal porn:
