The Justice quotes me incorrectly. As I stated to a Justice reporter as I left the faculty meeting, I believe that this move is necessary, owing to the dire financial circumstances of the University. I agree with Jonathan Sarna that this is a socially progressive solution, since it will hit lower-paid workers less or not at all.

Although I agree that this move serves as a disincentive for very senior faculty to retire--especially faculty members whose salaries were low during past down periods in Brandeis's history, I actually did not make that point in the faculty meeting. Another faculty member did. I did ask in the faculty meeting whether there were plans to reimburse the retirement accounts once our financial circumstances improve.

I bet Jehuda isn't losing any money from his pension. It's time for the Trustees to fire Jehuda Reinharz and to find an individual who actually cares about the students and faculty.

Sounds like a decent plan.

While I have never taken an economics class nor do I have any particular understanding of the way retirement funds work, I have to express a large amount of shock at the poster above me who wrote "Fire Jehuda." For the past months there has been so much talk of cutting faculty, cutting staff, that I personally was afraid that I would come to school one day and find that my bosses or my favorite professors had been gone. If I am reading this correctly, it seems like this move will negate that possibility. We as students will continue to benefit from working for and learning from Brandeis faculty and staff, and the faculty and staff's days aren't numbered. This cutback is only for a year. I'm not a math student either, but if there's a choice between cutting a bit of funding for a year or cutting someone's funding indefinitely... wouldn't the possibility of future earnings negate whatever setbacks this causes?

Peter French, Chief Operating Officer for Brandeis (and coincidentally now retiring) is responsible for the entire mess. Jehuda is Peter's little boy and when Peter says go raise me more money for my dorm project, my science center project, and my mismanaged IT staff -- Jehuda goes and kisses Shapiro backside.

What does Mr. french do with all money (some of which just isn't there)... in the face of the sub-prime mess, the wall street melt-down, and the Madoff fiasco... he just keeps borrowing and building. But like a bull with blinders on he never cared to look at the bottom falling out of the economy.

Today Brandeis, because of Peter French's mismanagement and arrogance, has laid-off more workers as a percentage of total staff than any competitor school, were lamb-based for trying to sell off the art museum to bail them out of their moronic economic decisions, and are now taking $7.4 of staff retirement money to, again, save them from their pattern of poor decisions.

Wake up community. This one man, Peter French, and his disconnected decisions are costing you the staff and resources upon which your once good name rests.

Shame on you Peter French... and shame on the Sr. Admin and Board that supported your obviously wrong-headed strategies and decisions.

Shame on you all.
