Imagination is an important part of learning, because it allows one to think in a creative way. In other words, imagination produces new ideas that the learner can assess. Imagination has a much greater depth than typical learning, because imagination can relate to that which is supernatural. Moreover, imagination emphasizes the affective domain of learning -- that is, one's feelings about something -- more than any other type of learning. In summary, I would say that imagination provides a person with the freedom necessary to think creatively and critically -- which does not occur in typical learning -- and this thought process encourages a sense of independence and depth by the learner.
